St. Leon is an Indiana town located 9 miles west of the Indiana and Ohio state lines. The town is situated in Dearborn County, the 28th largest county in Indiana. According to the Census Bureau, St. Leon had a population of about 670 people in 2014.
St. Leon is named after St. Leon Bembo of Venice, Italy. Bembo was a Catholic Saint and served as a diplomat to one of the Doges of Venice. The Town of St. Leon is the only town in Indiana that still holds a pole raising ceremony. The event takes place during election years. The first pole raising in St. Leon happened in 1892, approximately 40 years after the first post office was established in the town.
Although St. Leon is small in size, the town is home to attractive businesses and amenities. The St. Leon Community Park is located in the northern portion of the town and is the location of several community events. Also located in St. Leon is West Harrison St. Joseph School. This school first opened in 1920 and the original building is still standing in the town. Also located in St. Leon is the St. Leon Tavern, a popular meeting place amongst locals.
